Silkeborg Initiative: The first Young Scholars Symposium on Shallow Freshwater Ecosystem
Theme 2019: Basic Science About Macrophyte, Plankton and Fish
2019-12-17
Organizer: 1) Wuhan Botanical Garden (Key Laboratory of Aquatic Botany and Watershed Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences)
2) Botanical Society of Hubei and Wuhan
For many of freshwater scientists who have visited Silkeborg for short-term or long-term scientific or training programs, it would have brought significant effects on how to run the scientific studies and live a scientific life. Especially, we have met Prof. Erik Jeppesen, a non-classic Danish but believing in classic biomanipulation.
Silkeborg Initiative originated from two aspects. One is from Erik’s story. Many years ago, Prof. Jeppesen had one South America trip in Argentina. On the local streets, he walked with another famous limnologist. They were having dinner in a causal restaurant, sitting nearby the window. Across the street, there was an extravagant hotel serving all kinds of fancy food. They had a great conversation, that promoted this initiative, quoted as below:
' As a scientist, we can not have so much luxury to spend money in that hotel. However, we have so many copepods, which we can study for the whole life. '
Another aspect is from the slogan of ‘Never forget why you started’ created by President Xi. Shifting from Ph.D. students into an early-career scholars changes people and confuses people. There are so many different pathways to choose for young scientists, and sometime no proper guidance is there when it is needed.
This symposium aims to provide the platform for freshwater scientists to conduct scientific cooperation for freshwater scientists and an attractive opportunity for graduate students to find the potential job vacancy. The symposium will be arranged in the following years host by young freshwater scientist in related universities and institutes such as IHB and NIGLAS.
