Prof. Jianbing Yan from the National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement of Huazhong Agricultural University visited Wuhan Botanical Garden at the invitation of Prof. Pingfang Yang. He delivered a lecture entitled"The Application of Association Study in Crop Genetic Improvement” on July 10 th.
Prof. Yan introduced the collected maize germplasm resources and their phenotypic variation. Through the association study of 500 maize materials belonging to 4 recombinant inbred lines, they found 20 QTLs closely associated with Vitamin E content, and validated the cloned gene VTE4. At the same time, they used massively parallel RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to obtain 1030000 SNPs and the expression of 28769 genes. Besides, 74 QTLs associated with oil concentration were detected based on genome-wide association study.
Jianbing Yan is a Professor of College of Life Science and Technology at Huazhong Agricultural University. He is the member of the editorial board of Theoretical and Applied Genetics, Frontiers in Plant Genetics and Genomics and Molecular Breeding. Now, his main research interests are within the field of maize genetic basis of quantitative traits, QTL fine mapping cloning and molecular breeding.
