A delegation of Maasi Mara University (MMU) in Kenya visited Wuhan Botanical Garden (WBG) from 28th to 30th September 2014 at the invitation of China-Africa Center for Research and Education, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CACCAS). This delegation comprised 5 members, including the Council Chairman Okumu John Joseph, the Chancellor Ngunjiri Philip Gichonge and the Vice-Chancellor Nadolo Mary Khakoni.  

Director Li Shaohua, Secretary & Deputy-director Luo Zhiqiang, Deputy-secretary Gong Junjie and Deputy-director Zhang Quanfa of WBG attended the welcome ceremony. The welcoming and opening remarks were given by Director Li Shaohua. Prof. Wang Qingfeng, the Executive Director of CACCAS, introduced the development of CACCAS in detail.  

Prof. Zhang Yansheng, Guo Mingquan, Lü Shiyou and Hu Guangwan from WBG made lectures on natural product biosynthesis, medicinal plants and energy plants use and biodiversity conservation. Experts from MMU showed great interests in these areas and made academic exchanges with experts from WBG. MS. Nadolo Mary Khakoni, the Vice-Chancellor of MMU, expressed her wishes in long-term and stable cooperation with WBG. The delegation then visited the key laboratories of WBG. 

A memorandum of understanding on scientific research cooperation between MMU and CACCAS has been signed on 1st August. Based on this, the delegation took this opportunity to make in-depth discussion on future cooperation fields, cooperation methods and personnel training with Prof. Zhang Quanfa and Wang Qingfeng.  

This visitation is helpful to form a new cooperation platform, explore new cooperation areas and promote mutual communication between WBG and universities in Kenya. It is also a great chance to expand CACCAS’s influence in Africa.
