SAJOREC Holds the Theory and Techniques in River and Lake Ecosystem Health Assessment Online Training

2021-09-18

On September 14, 2021, Sino-Africa Joint Research Centre (SAJOREC) co-organized with “Belt and Road” River and Lake Ecological Protection Technology Joint Training Centre (RLEPC) , successfully held the online training with the title of “Theory and Techniques in River and Lake Ecosystem Health Assessment”. A total of 105 international students and researchers from Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Madagascar, Rwanda, Guinea, Sudan, Cambodia and Pakistan have registered for the training. Wuhan Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, as one of the offline venues, attracted a total of 22 African students participating in the training.

During the training, Professor XING Wei from Wetland Ecology Research Group of Wuhan Botanical Garden and Professor YANG Yuyi from Environmental Genomics Research Group of Wuhan Botanical Garden, together with researchers from Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research and Nanjing Agricultural University shared China’s rich experience and research results of river and lake ecological health assessment, and discussed the application of high and new technologies and methods in river and lake ecological protection in African and Southeast Asian countries.

"The health of lakes and rivers affects the quantity of fish and other aquatic species and water quality. Most of the aquatic species may not survive in poor quality contaminated water. There is need for continuous management and enforcement of environmental regulations" said by Lucy Njage, Senior Tourism Officer, Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, Kenya

"These trainings are of immense help in building capacities for individuals, institutions and countries in the management of these vital ecosystems. Specifically, noting the critical roles that these ecosystems serve in terms of supporting livelihood and biosphere." said by Aggrey Thuo, Associate Professor, Maasai Mara University.

In order to be more proactive on combating the global COVID-19 pandemic, SAJOREC has signed Memorandum of Understanding with RLEPC on Oct. 19, 2020. The two sides will join hands together and adhere to the principle of co-consultation, joint development and shared resources. The first joint online training with the title “Theory and Techniques in River and Lake Ecosystem Monitoring” was held in November, 2020, and “Theory and Techniques in River and Lake Ecological Protection and Restoration” will be held at 2022.
