Important Progress in Eco-Agricultural Plan in the Three-Gorges Reservoir Area

On May 18th, 2011, Premier WEN Jiabao chaired a State Council executive meeting and approved the Three-Gorges follow-up plan. Meanwhile, as one of the special plans, Special Plan on Eco-agriculture and Construction of Eco-agricultural Garden in the Three-Gorges Reservoir Area (Special Plan on Eco-agricultural Garden for short), which was jointly completed by Wuhan Botanical Garden, CAS, Yangtze River Survey Planning and Design Co., Ltd and Yangtze River Engineering Project Management and Consulting Co., Ltd, was also approved.
With the completion of the primary design work of the Three-Gorges Project, the Central leaders paid great attention to the follow-up plan. In order to implement the instructions of President HU Jintao and Premier WEN Jiabao, the Three-Gorges Office of the State Council started the follow-up work planning in 2008. As a national research institute on botany and ecology in Central China area, Wuhan Botanical Garden organized the research force at once and set up a working team. Vice Director ZHANG Quanfa worked as the team leader. Cooperating with Yangtze River Survey Planning and Design Co., Ltd and Yangtze River Engineering Project Management and Consulting Co., Ltd, the working team fully analyzed agricultural resources, agricultural environment and economic development level in the Reservoir Area and finally completed the Special Plan on Eco-agricultural Garden in May, 2011 after 13-month's efforts.
According to the plan, there will be 108 Eco-agricultural Gardens with a total area of 165,333,000 square meters. With total investment capital 3.7 billion Yuan, the Garden will cover 20 counties, 115 towns, 409 villages, and 1832 village teams. After the Gardens are constructed, the land economic efficiency will increase by 15~30%, the mountain, water, land, forest and road will be renovated, water and land loss as well as agricultural contamination will be controlled effectively, the top six supporting industries will be formed and the life condition of the migrants will be enhanced greatly.
