Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Wetland Evolution and Eco-Restoration was approved by Hubei Provincial Science & Technology Department, and set up in 2008 by the cooperation of WBG and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan). The laboratory focuses on basic research, extends to the basic and application researches, and carries out researches on the natural-historical procession and dynamic monitoring of the wetlands ecosystems, biology and ecology fundamentals for protection of wetlands ecosystems, as well as on theories and methods for restoration and reconstruction of compromised ecosystems. 

Major research fields of the laboratory are as follows: natural-historical procession and dynamic monitoring of the wetlands ecosystems, biology and ecology fundamentals for protection of wetlands ecosystems and theories and methods for restoration and reconstruction of compromised ecosystems. 

The laboratory has 36 fixed researchers, 34 doctors, and 16 of which are researchers and professors, those below the age of 50 accounting for 92%. The scholarship committee director of the laboratory is Cao Wenxuan, the academician of Institute of Hydrobiology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and director of the laboratory is Li Wei, the researcher of Wuhan Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
