Abstract:
In clinical study, metabolomics aims to characterize the metabolic disturbance at the disease state using large cohorts and further provides diagnostic evidence at the small molecular level. Mass spectrometry(MS) is by far the dominating analytical platform for clinical metabolomics due to the superiority in delivering high-quality qualitative and quantitative information of broad metabolome in the clinical sample. This review presents recent progress of clinical metabolomics spanning the complete workflow of sample collection, sample preparation, data acquisition and normalization. The applications of metabolomics in biomarker screening, disease phenotyping, and the prediction of clinical outcome are summarized, and future directions of clinical metabolomics are also discussed.
